Kalighat Temple

Significance

Kalighat is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths where the toes of Goddess Sati's right foot fell. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali and is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. The name 'Kolkata' (Calcutta) is believed to be derived from Kalighat. The goddess here is worshipped in her fierce form.

Legend & History

The temple has been a center of Kali worship for centuries. It gained prominence during the British era and is mentioned in various Hindu scriptures. The goddess here is depicted in her dark, fierce form standing on Lord Shiva. Daily rituals include animal sacrifices, which are an ancient tradition at this temple.
